Chapter 1: The First Stirrings
The aroma of freshly roasted beans wafted through the air, mingling with the low hum of chatter in the bustling coffee shop. Ah-Young, a regular, had chosen a corner table that offered her a quiet nook with an overlooking view of the street. She was engrossed in her book, her coffee untouched, when a shadow fell across her page. She looked up, her eyes widening slightly in surprise as she took in the man standing over her.
Lee Jun was tall, his broad shoulders accentuated by the tailored cut of his suit. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, as if he'd run his fingers through it one too many times. His eyes were a stormy grey, and they bore into hers with an intensity that made her feel seen, somehow, in a way she hadn't expected.
"Is this seat taken?" Jun asked, his voice a low rumble that sent an unexpected shiver down Ah-Young's spine. She glanced around the crowded shop, noting the empty seat.
"No," she replied, closing her book and placing it in her bag. "But I was considering moving to the window, actually."
Julian raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on his lips. "Oh, really? I suppose the view here isn't to your liking?"
Ah-Young felt the tension build between them. She wasn't sure if it was irritation or something else churning in her stomach. "It's fine," she said, her voice clipped.
Jun sat down, his gaze never leaving hers. "I'm Jun," he said, extending a hand.
Ah-Young hesitated before taking it. His grip was firm, his skin warm. "Ah-Young," she murmured, withdrawing her hand quickly.
Jun signalled to the barista, ordering a black coffee. Ah-Young picked up her own cup, taking a sip. It was then that Jun's gaze shifted, his eyes widening slightly as he took in the stain on her dress.
"Careful," he said, his tone mocking. "Or you'll make a mess of yourself."
Ah-Young felt her cheeks flush with embarrassment and anger. She set her cup down too hard, causing some of the liquid to spill over. "Excuse me?" she asked, her voice low.
Jun shrugged, leaned back in his chair. "Just an observation. Seems like you can't handle hot things."
Ah-Young felt her body grow hot, her heart pounding in her chest. She wanted to retort, to tell him off, but the words stuck in her throat as she caught his gaze. There was something bold, challenging in his eyes, and she felt a strange, undeniable pull towards him.
The air between them grew thick, charged with an unspoken tension. Ah-Young could feel her breath hitching in her chest, her heart pounding wildly. Jun's gaze flicked down to her lips, lingering there briefly before meeting her eyes again. It was intense, this connection, this moment. It was like a dance, a dance of wills, of desires yet unspoken.
The barista appeared with Jun's coffee, breaking the spell. They both turned to look at her, the moment passing. But as Ah-Young turned back to Jun, she saw it reflected in his eyes - a flare of something that told her this wasn't over. Far from it.
The rest of their time in the coffee shop passed in a blur of stolen glances and charged silences. Despite the initial tension, they found themselves drawn to each other, like moths to a flame. The sparks were there, unmistakable and undeniable. And whether they wanted to admit it or not, they were both eager for the ignition.
